Originally known as American Hill, the community of Mount Royal was once home to a large population of Americans who had settled in the area. Later, the community was renamed in honour of the Montreal community from which the president of the C.P.R. William E. Van Horne hailed. After Mount Royal was officially established in 1904, the area established rapid development through to 1914.
Today, the community is bound to the north at 17 Avenue, to the south by Council Way and 10 Street, to the east by College Lane and Royal Avenue and to the west by 14 Street. At the time when Mount Royal was experiencing its boom, restrictive covenants were put in place on property titles. As a result, development was restricted to single-family dwellings and a minimum was set on construction costs. As a result, the community developed an exclusive character that continues to this day.
