Altadore was named one of Calgary's best neighbourhoods in 2010 for its proximity to River Park, one of Calgary's best parks on the Elbow River, Marda Loop, the largest and busiest outdoor shopping area in Calgary, and for having a vibrant party and cultural scene. There is a Marda Loop Business Revitalization Zone within the community, along 33 and 34 Avenues SW. And the neighbourhood is experiencing a gentrification process with many high-end, semi-detached homes built in the last 15 years.
In the City of Calgary's 2018 municipal census, Altadore had a population of 6,831 living in 3,218 dwellings. Altadore neighbourhood demographics from the 2018 municipal census document: median personal income of $63,281 (2015), median household income of $130,638 (2015), 7% of residents are low income, 13% of residents are immigrants. 29% of dwellings are rentals, 38% of homes are detached, 30% semi-detached/duplex, 9% row housing, and 23% apartments.
Altadore has many amenities and services in the community in the Marda Loop shopping area, which houses over 100 trendy boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and businesses. Altadore, along with River Park, Garrison Woods, and South Calgary, creates the Marda Loop Community Association. Marda Loop was established in 1909 when it was a turnaround point for Calgary's Marda streetcar. In the present time, the Marda Loop no longer has a streetcar, but the popular hub remains as vibrant and busy as ever with all the events, eateries and shopping.
Sandy Park and River Park cover 54 hectares at the Elbow River's perimeter, which provides a beautiful oasis in Calgary's centre. River Park includes a large designated off-leash area for your fur babies to enjoy. Sandy Park contains BBQ stands, picnic areas, pedestrian and bike paths, a feature-filled playground, wash areas, rafting and canoeing with access to the Elbow River. An outdoor pool and tennis courts are located at the Marda Loop Community Association centre. Altadore also has curling rinks, outdoor and indoor skating rinks, indoor pools and golf courses.
