Established in 1945, the community of Altadore is bound to the south by 50 Avenue and to the west by Crowchild Trail. To the east, the community is bound by 33 Avenue, 20 Street and 26 Avenue, while the eastern boundary is formed by 14 Street and Elbow River. While the South Calgary area was annexed by the city in 1907, the area didn’t enjoy any real development until the early 1950s. Today, the Altadore and River Park neighbourhoods are recognized for their beautiful views of both the city and the mountains. Residents of the community also enjoy access to a number of amenities, including tennis courts, two skating rinks and an outdoor pool.
Children who live in Altadore may attend one of four different public elementary schools. These include Altadore, Jennie Elliott, St. James and William Reid, with William Reid offering a French Immersion program. The separate school of Holy Name also offers a French Immersion program, though elementary-aged children may also choose to attend the separate school of St. Michael. Junior high schools serving the area include the public schools of Mount Royal and Elboya, with Elboya offering a French Immersion program. The separate schools of St. James and St. Michael also serve junior high students. Area high schools include Central Memorial and Western Canada, which both offer French Immersion programs, and the separate schools of Bishop Carroll and St. Mary’s.

The meaning of "Altadore" could have been named from blend words whose first part came from "Alta" which is the old abbreviation of Alberta, or "alta" for high symbolizing the neighborhood being on a hill. The second part is derived from "dore", similar to the French word "d'or" which means "of gold."

The community of Altadore has two schools which are Altadore Elementary and the Dr. Oakley School. Dr. Oakley School is located on 20th Street S.W., and services students with disabilities in learning. Their grades range from 3-9. Altadore Elementary is located on 16th Street S.W. and services students from kindergarten to the 6th grade.
The junior high school of Altadore is Mount Royal Junior High in the Mount Royal neighborhood.
The senior high school in this community is Central Memorial High School. Which in addition to a regualr high school program also offers a Dance program.

Sandy Park and River Park cover 54 hectares at the perimeter of the Elbow River which provides a beautiful oasis in the centre of Calgary. River Park includes a large designated off leash area as well for your beloved dogs. Sandy Park contains BBQ stands, picnic areas, pedestrian and bike paths, feature filled playgrounds and wash areas. Into rafting and canoing? Well you can do that as you have access to the Elbow River.
Altadore has River Park and Sandy Park in addition to an outdoor pool at the Marda Loop Community Association centre. Like tennis, have fun playing to your hearts content at the tennis courts. Altadore also has curling rinks, outdoor and indoor skating rinks, indoor pools and golf courses.
Altadore along with River Park, Garrison Woods, and South Calgary creates the Marda Loop Community Association. Marda Loop was established in way back in 1909 when Marda Loop was a turnaround point for Calgary’s Marda streetcar. Now in the present time, the Marda Loop no longer has a street car but the popular hub remains as vibranbt and busy as ever with all the events, eateries and shopping around.
The Marda Loop Community Association was created September 6th, 1957 to aid residents of South Calgary during the great population growth period during the 1950s.
Today, Marda Loop continues to grow and reinvent itself and our communities association now represents the citizens of South Calgary, Altadore, Garrison Woods, and River Park.
