Why Golf Living Appeals to Calgary Buyers
For some buyers, golf is part of how they want to live, not just a weekend activity. Calgary has courses run by the City, public and semi-private courses anyone can book, and private clubs — several of them sitting inside established residential communities. Some homes back directly onto fairways. Others sit close enough that you can be at the first tee in minutes.
You do not have to golf to appreciate it. A course behind the fence means open space instead of a rear neighbour, and a view that does not depend on what gets built next door — as long as the course stays a course, which is worth checking (see below).
You do not have to be chasing par to appreciate a good golf community. Sometimes you just want the view without the scorecard reminding you who is boss.
- Open space behind the home instead of a rear neighbour.
- Convenience — nine holes after work, a lesson or a range session without a long drive.
- Clubs run leagues, events and dining that can become part of your social life if you join.
- The green space matters to non-golfers too: families, downsizers and anyone who wants a less boxed-in outlook.
Communities With a Course Inside Them
Each community below has a golf course inside it or on its edge, located by the course’s own address, how the operator describes itself, and City of Calgary parcel and community-boundary data. Three club names mislead: Silver Springs Golf & Country Club is in Varsity, Inglewood Golf & Curling Club is in Southview, and Country Hills Golf Club spans Country Hills and Panorama Hills.
The Hamptons Golf Club, at 69 Hamptons Drive NW, describes itself as a members-only club tucked within The Hamptons community, with 18 holes. Some homes back onto the course; many more are a short walk from it.
Valley Ridge Golf Club is at 11618 Valley Ridge Park NW. The club describes its 18-hole course as semi-private and open to the public, with the front nine running along the Bow River.
Country Hills Golf Club is a private club with 36 holes on two courses, the Ridge and the Talons, at 1334 Country Hills Boulevard NW. City of Calgary parcel data puts the course land across Country Hills and Panorama Hills; the club describes its setting as the cliffs of the Sandstone Valley.
Silver Springs Golf & Country Club is a private club with a par-72 championship course at 1600 Varsity Estates Drive NW. Despite its name, the club describes itself as set within Varsity Estates, and City parcel data places the course in Varsity, bordering Silver Springs.
Willow Park Golf & Country Club, established in 1965, is a membership club at 639 Willow Park Drive SE, inside the community that shares its name.
Maple Ridge Golf Course, at 1240 Mapleglade Drive SE, is one of the City of Calgary’s own courses: 18 holes, bookable without a membership.
Confederation Park Golf Course is a City of Calgary 9-hole course with a driving range at 3204 Collingwood Drive NW. The course land is in Collingwood and borders Capitol Hill.
Shaganappi Point Golf Course, at 1200 26 Street SW, is the City’s inner-city golf location: an 18-hole course, a 9-hole course and a driving range. The course land is in Shaganappi and borders Spruce Cliff.
Inglewood Golf & Curling Club, at 19 Gosling Way SE, describes itself as a semi-private, non-profit club with an 18-hole course along the Bow River beside the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Despite the name, City parcel data places it in Southview, bordering Dover, not in Inglewood.
Blue Devil Golf Club, at 2300 194 Avenue SE, describes itself as a public course in the Fish Creek Park river valley, in Chaparral Valley; City parcel data places it in Chaparral, bordering Fish Creek Park. It has an 18-hole course and a 9-hole short course, the Lil Devil.
Public Golf Courses in Calgary
You do not need a membership to play regularly in this city. The City of Calgary runs seven golf courses at five locations, and several privately run courses describe themselves as public or semi-private. Hole counts and addresses below are as each operator lists them; check the operator for current rates, tee times and seasons.
Private & Semi-Private Clubs in Calgary and Area
Private clubs add dining, events, leagues and practice facilities to the golf, and membership is arranged with the club — buying a home beside one does not come with playing privileges. For serious golfers, which club they want to join can shape where they look for a home.
Other Courses Inside the City
- McKenzie Meadows Golf Club · 18 holes, par 72 · 17215 McKenzie Meadows Drive SE, bordering McKenzie Lake (not a City-run course)
What to Consider Before Buying in a Golf Community
Golf course living can be excellent, but not every course lot is equal, and the view is only part of the story. We would be doing you a disservice if we only sold the view.
Key Factors When Evaluating a Golf Course Property
- Lot position: Where does the home sit relative to tee boxes, landing zones, greens and cart paths? Behind a tee is usually calm; beside a landing zone on a hole that invites a slice is not.
- Ball exposure: Homes near landing zones see errant shots — dinged siding, the occasional broken window. Look at which faces of the house are exposed and whether fencing, trees or window placement help.
- Noise and activity: A quiet course in November is a different place on a sunny Saturday in July. Expect golfer chatter, early-morning mowing and irrigation in season.
- Privacy: Some course lots feel very exposed. Others have mature trees, grade changes or setbacks that create real separation.
- Price against interior lots: A course-backing lot can cost more than a comparable lot a street over. Compare both before deciding what the view is worth to you.
- The course’s future: The outlook depends on the course staying a course. Find out who owns the land and how it is designated before you pay for the view.
When a Course Stops Being a Course
It has happened in Calgary. The former Harvest Hills Golf Course was rezoned for housing; by May 2019, a development of more than 700 homes on the old course was about 40 per cent complete. In March 2017 Council approved a land use change for the former Highland Park Golf Course; the City has since said a regional drainage study means the landowner will be unable to develop those lands as the approved plan contemplated. In April 2017 Council also approved an outline plan for 64 homes on two sites of The Hamptons golf course lands. And the City closed its own Richmond Green Golf Course after the 2019 season; the land is being rebuilt as a regional park. None of this means your course is at risk — but it is why ownership and land use belong on the checklist.
Golf is the hook. The home still has to work. Look beyond the view and understand how the property functions in real life — orientation, privacy, noise and daily livability matter as much as the outlook.
Property Types Near Calgary Golf Courses
Golf-related real estate in Calgary varies widely: detached homes backing onto fairways, walkouts facing greens, bungalows and villas in established communities, townhomes and condos near public courses, and acreage-style homes outside the city in Bearspaw and Springbank. The right fit depends on how you want to live, not just how close you want to be to the first tee.
Finding a Home Near a Course
Live MLS® listings that mention a golf course are on our Calgary golf course homes search, which updates through the day. Listing descriptions do not always say whether a home backs onto play, so when a community above interests you, browse that community’s page too and ask us to check the lot against the course layout.
