How Calgary’s Communities Are Organized

Calgary is a city of roughly 200 residential communities, and every address belongs to one of four quadrants — NW, NE, SW, and SE. Centre Street divides the city east from west, while the Bow River and Centre Avenue mark the north–south line, which is why every Calgary street name ends in a quadrant suffix. The boundaries on this Calgary communities map follow the City of Calgary’s official community districts, so what you see here is how the city itself defines each neighbourhood.

Those boundaries matter more than most buyers expect. School catchments, community association fees, and even Calgary market statistics are reported community by community — two homes a block apart can sit in different school zones and price bands. If you are comparing areas for a move, start with the map above, then open a community page for its listings, census profile, and neighbourhood guide, or browse all homes for sale in Calgary in one search.

Lake Communities

Eight Calgary communities offer private lake access — a four-season amenity unique to the city. Explore Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Lake Bonavista, Arbour Lake, McKenzie Lake, Chaparral, Sundance, and Midnapore, or see the full Calgary lake communities guide.

Family Suburbs

Calgary’s newer edges are built around schools, pathways, and rec centres. Tuscany and Evanston anchor the northwest and north, while Cranston, Legacy, Walden, and Seton lead the deep south — and Livingston is the north’s newest hub.

Inner-City & Character

Minutes from downtown, communities like Altadore, Marda Loop, Hillhurst, Bridgeland, Mission, and Killarney mix character homes, modern infills, and walkable main streets.

Luxury & Estate

Calgary’s established prestige addresses include Upper Mount Royal and Elbow Park, while Aspen Woods, Springbank Hill, and West Springs carry the west side’s estate market.

Condos & Townhomes

University & Established NW

Around the University of Calgary, Varsity and Brentwood pair 1960s family streets with LRT access and deep condo stock — perennial favourites for medical and academic buyers.

Calgary Communities Map FAQs

How many communities are there in Calgary?
The City of Calgary recognizes roughly 200 residential communities, organized into four quadrants (NW, NE, SW, SE). This map shows 212 community boundaries, including established districts and the newest communities on Calgary’s edges, and each one links to its own homes-for-sale page and neighbourhood guide.
How do Calgary’s quadrants work?
Every Calgary address ends in NW, NE, SW, or SE. Centre Street splits the city east–west and the Bow River/Centre Avenue line splits it north–south. Quadrants are the fastest way to shortlist areas: browse NW Calgary homes for sale, NE Calgary, West Calgary, or SE Calgary to compare their communities side by side.
Which Calgary communities have private lakes?
Calgary’s lake communities include Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Lake Bonavista, Arbour Lake, McKenzie Lake, Chaparral, Sundance, and Midnapore. Residents pay an annual fee for beach, swimming, skating, and clubhouse access. See the full Calgary lake communities guide for fees and comparisons.
Are these community boundaries official?
Yes — the boundaries follow the City of Calgary’s community district boundaries, the same ones used for census data and community associations. They are drawn for reference and simplified slightly for fast loading, so treat edges as approximate when a property sits right on a boundary road.
