Quick answer

  • Calgary's market includes several established brokerages — RE/MAX, Royal LePage, CIR Realty, Century 21, Coldwell Banker, Sotheby's International Realty, eXp Realty and others.
  • The brokerage matters, but the individual REALTOR® or team you actually work with usually matters more to your day-to-day experience as a buyer or seller.

"Top brokerage" questions come up a lot, and it's worth separating two different things: which brokerages are established and well-run, and which REALTOR® you should actually hire. Those aren't the same decision.

Established brokerages active in Calgary

This isn't a ranking — brokerages differ in size and model, not in a single "best" order. A few of the established names in the Calgary market:

  • RE/MAX — a long-established independent-agent network with strong national brand recognition.
  • Royal LePage — including Royal LePage Benchmark, one of Calgary's larger brokerages with multiple local offices.
  • CIR Realty — one of Calgary's largest locally-headquartered brokerages.
  • Century 21 — including Century 21 Bamber Realty, a long-standing Calgary firm.
  • Coldwell Banker — an established brand with a Calgary presence.
  • Sotheby's International Realty — global brand reach, generally focused on the luxury segment.
  • eXp Realty — a cloud-based brokerage model with agents and teams across Alberta, including CalgaryListings Group.

Brokerage presence and agent rosters change over time — always confirm current details directly with a brokerage rather than relying on any single list, including this one.

What a brokerage actually provides

  • Oversight and compliance — trust account handling, contract review, and regulatory compliance under RECA.
  • Technology and systems — the tools agents use for MLS® access, transaction management and marketing.
  • Training and support — onboarding and continuing education for the agents licensed there.
  • Brand and referral network — name recognition and, for larger or national brands, referral connections in other markets.

Why the individual REALTOR® usually matters more

Two REALTORS® at the exact same brokerage can differ enormously in experience, communication, neighbourhood knowledge, and negotiation skill. The brokerage sets the infrastructure; it doesn't determine how responsive your agent is, how well they know the community you're targeting, or how they'll advise you when a property looks like a mistake. See our guide on what actually separates a REALTOR®, a team, and a brokerage for more on this distinction.

Buyers sometimes ask me which brokerage is best, but that's rarely the question that actually affects their experience. The brokerage is infrastructure. The person representing you is the one making the calls that matter.

What to actually evaluate

Ask about both — the brokerage's oversight and support is worth knowing, but spend most of your evaluation time on the individual REALTOR® or team: their experience, their communication style, and whether they know the specific area you're targeting. Our team vs. individual REALTOR® guide covers that decision in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the brokerage matter when choosing a REALTOR®?

Yes, but usually less than the individual REALTOR® or team you'll actually work with. The brokerage provides oversight, compliance and technology; the REALTOR® provides the advice, negotiation and communication that shape your actual experience.

Is a bigger brokerage always better?

Not necessarily. A larger brokerage may offer more infrastructure and referral reach, but a smaller or independent brokerage can offer the same level of compliance and support with a different culture. Evaluate the agent first.

What brokerage is CalgaryListings Group with?

eXp Realty.
