Which side of Calgary is best for commuting downtown?

The side matters less than the line. Downtown sits just south of the Bow and well north of the built city's midpoint, so the inner ring commutes well in every direction. Past that ring, the northwest, northeast, west and south all have CTrain coverage; the deep southeast currently has none.

Is downtown Calgary in the centre of the city?

Not geographically. It sits immediately south of the Bow River and toward the west of the city centre, and because the street grid extends much further south than north, downtown ends up well north of the midpoint of the built-up city. Does living closer to downtown Calgary mean a shorter commute?

Downtown is not in the middle

Downtown Calgary sits immediately south of the Bow, toward the west of the city centre — and because the street grid runs much further south than it does north, that puts it well north of the built city’s midpoint. Equal-sounding distances are not equal. A deep-south address is a longer trip than a far-north one, and a far-east address on Deerfoot behaves differently again.

This is also why the inner ring in every direction commutes well. The communities immediately around downtown — north across the river, west along the Bow, south through the Beltline and Mission, east through Inglewood and Ramsay — are all short trips. The question only gets interesting past that ring.

Rail coverage by direction

Northwest. Red Line, running out to Tuscany. The best-covered outer direction.
Northeast. Blue Line, six stations out to Saddletowne.
West. Blue Line, out to 69 Street.
South. Red Line, down through the south end.
Southeast. No line running. A Green Line is planned; treat any timeline as subject to change.
