How Does Calgary'squadrant system work?

The two letters at the end of an address are not a flourish. Ignore them and you will drive to the wrong side of the city.

Where the lines are

Calgary is split into four quadrants — northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast — and every address carries one.

Streets run north–south and avenues run east–west, with numbering counting outward from the centre. Once that clicks, an address tells you roughly where you are before you look at a map: 17th Avenue SW is seventeen avenues south of centre, on the west side.

Why it genuinely matters

Because the numbering restarts in each quadrant, the same street number and street name can exist in all four. A delivery, a showing or a job interview sent to the wrong quadrant is not a small detour — it can be forty minutes across the city.

It matters for house hunting too. Quadrants carry different characters, price levels and commute realities, and locals use them as shorthand for a whole set of assumptions. When someone here says "we're looking in the northwest," they are communicating rather more than a compass direction.

If you take one thing from this page: always write the quadrant, always read the quadrant, and never assume an address without one.

What each quadrant is broadly like

These are generalisations and every quadrant contains exceptions in both directions. They are a starting point for orientation, not a verdict.
