Christmas Lights

The holiday season is a great time for family togetherness and fun for the whole family. Whether you are looking for something simple to do or you are interested in something a bit more extravagant or involved, the City of Calgary offers plenty of activities for families and children to enjoy over the holiday season. Here are a few ideas of things that you might want to consider doing this holiday season.

Activity #1: See the Lights

If you want to see some beautiful holiday lights over the holiday season, there are many opportunities available. From the lights at the Calgary Zoo to the Airdire Festival of Lights, the city has millions of lights on display throughout the Christmas season. You might also want to check out the Lion's Festival of Lights at Confederation Park on 14 Street or simply take a drive through the city and enjoy the  many private homes with beautiful displays.

Activity #2: Visit Heritage Park

Each year, the historical village of Heritage Park offers its "Once Upon a Christmas" production. This year, the old-fashioned Christmas production will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm through until December 22. Here, you can explore the historical village of Christmas past while enjoying a scenic horse-drawn wagon ride. You can also do some Christmas shopping at one of the quaint shops and even pay a visit to Santa.

Activity #3: Take in a Production

Another option is to take your family to a wonderful Christmas production in Calgary. The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has several holiday-related programs to select from. As an alternative, you may want to take in a holiday comic mystery put on by Pegasus Performances or take in a production of A Christmas Carol presented by Theatre Calgary. You might also enjoy taking the family to see The Nutcracker or one of the many other holiday productions that are put on throughout the city.

Activity #4: Join a Camp

Each year, the City of Calgary offers a number of camps for kids during the holiday season. This year's camps include the following:

    • Frosty Frolics – located at the Village Square Leisure Centre, this camp offers games, gym activities, sports, daily swimming and crafts to children ranging in age from 5 through 12.

    • Holiday Hoopla – located at the Southland Leisure Centre, this camp offers games, sports, swimming and arts and crafts to children ranging in age from 5 through 12.

    • Stop, Drop & Shop – located at both Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres, this camp offers games, crafts and swimming to children ranging in age from 3 through 9 while their parents get their shopping done.
