The neighbourhood’s original schools have been in continuous operation since the late 1950s and are experiencing a population boom. Some redevelopment is beginning to occur in Westgate, a community with a highly active and engaged community association. Beautiful lots, wide sidewalks, back lanes, mature trees and great amenities make Westgate a popular choice in West Calgary.
Westgate Real Estate
Homes prices in this 1950s era neighbourhood reflect the city’s average home prices. There are a small number of apartment-style condos in Westgate and a good selection of moderately-priced attached homes for sale. The three-bedroom bungalow with formal living and dining room is standard fare in Westgate with prices around the half million dollar mark. Lot sizes are generous and the community features many parks and playgrounds graced by wonderful mature trees. There are about 3,200 people living in this quiet south-west neighbourhood which is experiencing some redevelopment. Infill homes fetch in excess of $1 million. Compared to its neighbouring community to the north – Wildwood – Westgate offers benefits in its location but better value in terms of real estate prices and selection. Westgate Neighbourhood Amenities
With Bow Trail on the north side and 17 Ave SW to the south of Westgate, it’s quick to get downtown. The LRT is accessible via an underground station next to Westbrook Mall. It’s the only underground station in the entire LRT system. Westgate residents can hop on Sarcee Trail to get to the Ring Road and the highway out of the city. Westbrook Mall is just a few blocks east of the community and has everything Westgate residents require including restaurants, automotive repair and entertainment at Jubilations Dinner Theatre. Further down Sarcee Trail is the massive West Hills and Signal Hill Shopping District. The CORE downtown is a close major shopping area and is a 10-minute train ride or drive.
The neighbourhood’s location is minutes from Edworthy Park, Optimist Park and 15 minutes to the pathways around the reservoir. It’s minutes away from Shaganappi Golf Course.
The Westgate Community Association operates an outdoor rink and a variety of social programs including movie nights and a weekly jam in the community hall. There’s commercial kitchen space available and the hall is always available to rent.
As an older community, Westgate has several great schools within walking distance or a short bus ride away. Westgate Elementary is a public French Immersion School. Holy Name offers French in the separate school systems. Nearby Wildwood Elementary and St. Michael Schools accept elementary school students from Westgate. Junior High students attend Vincent Massy, Bishop Pinkham in Lakeview and St. Michael School. Senior High School students have great choice between Ernest Manning, Central Memorial, Western Canada (French Immersion and IB Programs) and Bishop Carroll (self-directed). Catholic students can also elect to attend St. Mary’s.
Mount Royal University is just 10 minutes south of Westgate, with the University of Calgary and SAIT a single train transfer away.
