Despite being annexed by the city in 1907, the community of West Hillhurst wasn't officially established until 1945. With humble roots that start as nothing more than a farm owned by a prominent pioneer family, the community later evolved to feature a number of Victory homes that were built for returning soldiers. While these homes were designed to only be around for 5 years, many still exist in the community today. The community is also served by a very active community centre, which regularly hosts a variety of activities and events throughout the year. These include jazzercise, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, squash and martial arts.
Situated on the north bank of the Bow River, the community of West Hillhurst is bound to the north by Toronto Crescent and 12 Avenue, to the south by Bow River, to the east by 18 Street and to the west by 28 Street. Thanks to the community's location near to the Downtown Calgary area, residents enjoy access to all that the Downtown area has to offer. The community is also located near the Alberta College of Art, SAIT and the University of Calgary. The community centre also provides residents with access to a variety of recreational facilities, including a skating rink, a running track, exercise rooms and squash courts.
Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the West Hillhurst community may attend the public schools of Queen Elizabeth and Banff Trail and the Catholic schools of St. Joseph and St. Pius. The Catholic junior high schools of St. Joseph and Madeleine d'Houet serve the community as well. High schools serving the community include the public schools of Queen Elizabeth and William Aberhart and the Catholic schools of St. Francis and St. Mary's.
