Situated in Calgary's inner city and across from the Bow River, the community of Sunnyside was established in 1914. As such, the community is among the oldest of Calgary's many neighbourhoods. Today, the community is bound to the north by 8 Avenue and 14 Street, to the south by Bow River, to the east by 10 Street and the escarpment south of Crescent Road, and to the west by 18 Street. Following the construction of the Mewata Bridge over the Bow River, which took place in 1954, the community was linked to the Downtown area via 14th Street. The bridge played a major role in initiating the area's commercial redevelopment.
Thanks to the Sunnyside community's location, residents of the community enjoy easy access to a variety of recreational opportunities. Popular recreational facilities include Riley Park and Hillhurst Athletic Park. The Hillhurst/Sunnyside community association provides residents with additional recreational opportunities and activities, including a seniors program and youth sports. Facilities provided to residents through the community association include ball diamonds, soccer pitches and tennis courts.
Children of residents who are interested in homes for sale in the Sunnyside community may attend one of four different elementary schools. These include the public schools of Sunnyside and King George and the Catholic schools of St. Joseph and St. Pius. Both King George and St. Pius offer French Immersion programs. Junior high schools serving the Sunnyside community include the public schools of Rosedale, Queen Elizabeth and George P. Vanier and the Catholic schools of St. Joseph and St. Michael. Of these five schools, only George P. Vanier offers a French Immersion program. The Sunnyside community is also served by four high schools. These include the public high schools of Crescent Heights and William Aberhart and the Catholic schools of St. Francis and St. Mary's.
