Despite having been annexed to the city of Calgary in 1961, the community of Sundance was not established until 1982. As part of the Mid-Sun community, Sundance is served by the same community association that serves neighboring Midnapore. Together, the communities comprise an area that is bound to the north by Fish Creek Provincial Park, to the south by Marquis of Lorne Trail, to the east by Fish Creek Provincial Park and to the west by Macleod Trail. Sundance itself is bordered to the north and the east by Fish Creek Park. Thanks to the location of the community, residents enjoy ample opportunity for outdoor recreation while still having easy access to the city's extensive pathway system.
In addition to being located near to Fish Creek Park and other recreational opportunities, the Sundance community also features an expansive lake and opportunities to participate in a number of activities and events. Many of these activities take place in the community centre, which is capable of holding up to 250 people within its main hall. Some of activities offered in the community centre include Tae Kwan Do, badminton, drama, school dances and break dancing. Special events that take place in the community include the Canada Day celebration as well as regular parties at the lake.
Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the Sundance community may attend the public schools of Sundance and Fish Creek or the separate or Catholic schools of Father James Whelihan, St. Cecilia and Mother Teresa. Of these schools, only Sundance and St. Cecilia offer French Immersion programs. The Sundance community is also served by the public junior high schools of Midsun and Fairview, with both Fairview and Ecole St. Matthew offering French Immersion programs. The public high schools of Centennial and Dr. E.P. Scarlette and the separate high school of Bishop O'Byrne also serve the community, with Dr. E.P. Scarlett offering a French Immersion program.
