Developed in two phase, development of the Bow River community started in 1909 and then resumed in 1911. It wasn't until 1912, however, that the community was officially established. In the 1950s, the community was redeveloped and rezoned, at which time a number of apartment-style walkups were created. Today, the community is bound to the north by Bow River, to the south by 17 Avenue and Crowchild Trail, to the east by 14 Street and to the west by the east boundary of the Shaganappi Golf Course and 24A Street.

The Sunalta community association is quite active, particularly when it comes to addressing the concerns of its residents. Aside from addressing advocacy issues, the community also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. Some of these events include Spring Cleanup, a Pancake Breakfast, a Christmas Party and a Block Party. Dance groups, art classes and a variety of recreational activities also take place within the community centre, which is capable of holding up to 120 people within its main hall. The community center also features an outdoor skating rink for residents to enjoy.

Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the Sunalta community may attend the public school of Sunalta Elementary or Westgate, the latter of which offers a French Immersion program. Catholic elementary schools serving the community include Sacred Heart and Holy Name, with Holy Name offering a French Immersion program. Public junior high schools serving the Sunalta community include Mount Royal and Bishop Pinkham, with Bishop Pinkham offering a French Immersion program. Catholic junior high schools serving the community include St. Monica and St. Michael. The public high school of Western Canada, which offers a French Immersion program, also serves the Sunalta community, as does the Catholic high school of St. Mary's.  Show Less...
