Despite having been annexed to the City of Calgary in 1907, the community of South Calgary was established just seven years later. Residents of the South Calgary community enjoy access to a variety of recreational activities provided by the community association. Some of the resources available to residents include tennis courts, an outdoor pool and two skating rinks. During the summer, these skating rinks are transformed into beach volleyball courts. A variety of play groups and sports teams are also active within the community, as are clubs and organizations.
Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in South Calgary may attend Richmond, Altadore or William Reid, with William Reid offering a French Immersion program. Catholic elementary schools also serve the community. These include Sacred Heart and Holy Name, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. The public junior high schools of Mount Royal and Elboya also serve the South Calgary community, with Elboya offering a French Immersion program. The Catholic junior high schools of St. Michael and St. Monica also serve the community. High school students who live in the South Calgary community may attend either Western Canada or Central Memorial, with both offering French Immersion programs.
