Situated in the southwest corner of Calgary, the community of Somerset was established in 1995. Along with the neighbouring community of Bridlewood, Somerset was designed to offer plenty of open space for linear parks and community recreation areas. Today, the community is bordered to the north by 162 Avenue, to the south by Marquis of Lorne Trail, to the east by Macleod Trail and to the west by Sacree Trail Extension. In addition, the community features a number of pathways as well as easy access to major transportation routes, including Macleod Trail and Marquis of Lorne Trail.
While the Somerset and Bridlewood community association does not currently have a community centre, it still manages to provide residents with a number of activities. The historic Shawnessey Barn, for example, is regularly used for community dances. The community also features baseball diamonds and a waterpark. Furthermore, the nearby Spruce Meadows and Midnapore both allow the Somerset community to utilize its facilities. At Midnapore, residents can access the South Fish Creek recreation center, which offers a number of recreational opportunities.
Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the Somerset community may attend the public schools of Somerset, Ethel M. Johnstone, Janet Johnstone or Sundance. Both Janet Johnstone and Sundance offer French Immersion programs. While Ethel M. Johnstone and Janet Johnstone both serve only Kindergarten and 1st grade students, Sundance serves 2nd through 6th grade students and Somerset serves Kindergarten through 4th grade students. The separate or Catholic elementary schools of Mdgr. J.J. O'Brian, Mother Teresa and St. Gerard also serve the community, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. The public junior high schools of Harold Panabaker and Elboy also serve the community, with both offering a French Immersion program. Harold Panabaker only serves 7th and 8th grade students, while Elboya serves 9th grade. Catholic junior high schools serving the community include Mdgr. J.J. O'Brien and Ecole St. Matthew. High schools serving the community include Centennial and Dr. E.P. Scarlet, with the latter offering a French Immersion program, as well as the Catholic or separate high school of Bishop O'Byrne.
