Situated near the north edge of the city of Calgary, the Sherwood community is bound to the north by the Nolan Hill community, to the west by Sarcee Trail, to the east by Shaganappi Trail and to the south by The Hamptons community As such, the community is one of five communities considered to be part of the Symons Valley Residential area. Other communities found in Symons Valley include Evanston, Kincora, Nolan Hill and Sage Hill.
As part of this residential area, residents of the Sherwood community enjoy easy access to a number of commercial centers and recreational opportunities. A number of shopping centres, villages, malls and plazas are available in the area, while nearby recreational facilities include Butterfield Acres, Crowfoot Arena, Crowchild Twin Arenas and Cradel Center. The community is also home to the Nose Hill Natural Environment Park and Confluence Park as well as several golf courses. These include the Hamptons Golf and Country Club, Country Hills Golf Course, Harvest Hills Golf Course, Silverwing Golf Course, Highland Golf and Country Club, Confederation Golf Course and Silver Springs Golf and Country Club.
Homes within the Sherwood community were developed by a number of high-regarded developers in the area. These include Genesis Land Development Inc., which developed the Sherwood Estates area, Melcor and Intergufl-Cidex. Melcor developed the area known simply as Sherwood, while Intergulf-Cidex developed the Becon Heights portion of the community. All of the homes within the Sherwood community offer high-end features and unique floor plans, making it possible for buyers to find a home within the community to suit their lifestyle.
Children who lie in the Sherwood community may be educated in the public schools of West Dalhousie, H.D. Cartwright and Sir Winston Churchill.
