Despite having been annexed in 1910, the community of Shaganappi was not established until 1949. The name of the community, which means "rawhide" in Cree, dates back to the 1870s during which time the Cree lived in the area. Today, the community is bound to the north by the Escarpment on the south side of 10 Avenue, to the south by 17 Avenue, to the east by Crowchild Trail and to the west by Shaganappi Golf Course and 8 Avenue.
Thanks to the community's location atop a bluff, residents of Shagnappi enjoy great views of the Bow River Valley below. At the same time, the community is located near to the Downtown area as well as a number of recreational sites. The community itself is beautifully landscaped with mature trees, while residents enjoy access to an ice rink, a playground, tobogganing hills, tennis courts, a baseball diamond, a community hall and a coulee. The community centre also serves as the host for a variety of community activities and organizations, including a wine tasting club, a vintage car club, arts and crafts programs, Girl Guide, Boy Scouts and karate classes.
Students whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the community of Shaganappi are served by two public elementary schools, Alex Ferguson and Westgate, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. The community is also served by three public junior high schools. These include Mount Royal, Vincent Massey and Bishop Pinkham, with Bishop Pinkham offering a French Immersion program. High school students living in the Shaganappi community may attend the public high schools of either Ernest Manning or Western Canada, with Western Canada offering a French Immersion program. Several Catholic schools are also available throughout the City of Calgary and the surrounding area, giving parents several educational options to select from. Show Less...
