Situated in the extreme northwest portion of Calgary, the community of Royal Oak was founded in 1997 after being annexed from the Municipal District of Rockyview. Today, the community is bound to the north by 122 Avenue and Country Hills Boulevard, to the south by Crowchild Trail, to the east by Stoney Trail and to the west by Twelve Mile Coulee Road and 117 Street. Thanks to the community's location, residents enjoy a significant amount of green space within the community's wetlands and woods. The community also overlooks the Rocky Mountains, providing Royal Oaks members with amazing views of the surrounding nature.

In addition to providing residents with ample opportunity for exploring the outdoors, Royal Oak is also connected to the city's extensive pathway network. The community association, which actively advocates on behalf of the community's residents, provides residents with additional opportunities to take dance classes, participate in outdoor sports and to enjoy a variety of events throughout the year.

Children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the Royal Oak community may attend one of several different elementary schools. These include the public schools of Belvedere-Parkway and Banff Trail, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. The Royal Oaks community is also served by three Catholic elementary schools, including St. Dominic, St. Luke and St. Sylvester. The Royal Oak community is also served by four different junior high schools, including the public junior high schools of Simons Fraser and Branton and the Catholic junior high schools of St. Jean Brebeuf and Madeleine d'Houet. Branton is the only one of these four schools to offer a French Immersion program. High schools serving the Royal Oak community include the public schools of Bowness and William Aberhart and the Catholic school of St. Francis.
