Situated on the south slope of the Bow River Valley escarpment, the community of Montgomery is bound to the north by 32 Avenue, to the south by Bow River, to the east by Shaganappi Trail and to the west by Bow River. After purchasing the area that is now known as Montgomery in 1906, James Shouldice named the community after his family. Four years later, he donated the 100 acres along the Bow River to the City so it could be used as park space, while the remaining land came to be known as the community of Shouldice Terrace. After experiencing problems with the post office regarding the name, however, the name was changed to Montgomery in 1943 in honor of the celebrated military leader Bernard Law Montgomery
.Since Montgomery was a town prior to being annexed to the city in 1963, much of the community's development took place in the 1940s. Today, residents still enjoy many of the recreational facilities that were developed during this time and later. Some of these include the Shouldice Athletic Park, the Shouldice Arena and the Shouldice Memorial Pool. Shouldice Park, which was built in 2002, also provides a great deal of green space for residents to enjoy.
