Despite being annexed to Calgary in two stages, with one stage in 1972 and the other in 1979, the community of MacEwan Glen was not established until 1982. Following its establishment, the community of MacEwan Glen underwent significant development, though it still remains a primarily low-density residential community. Bound to the north by Country Hills Boulevard, to the south by the north boundary of Nose Hill Park and Berkshire Boulevard, to the east by Beddington Trail Boulevard and to the west by Shaganappi Trail, the community provides residents with easy access to a number of nearby recreational opportunities. Popular choices among residents include the pathway system and the nearby Nose Hill Park.

The MacEwan community features a topography that can be described as an upland plateau that is surrounded by gradually sloping land. The community does include intermittent coulees in order to provide the area with the proper drainage, while the land to the north of the community is primarily used for agricultural purposes.

Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in homes for sale in the MacEwan Glen community may attend the public schools of Simons Valley or Highwood, with Highwood offering a French Immersion program. The community is also served by the Catholic elementary schools of Msgr. Neville Anderson and St. Luke. Junior high schools serving the MacEwan Glen community include the public schools of Simon Fraser and George P. Vanier and the Catholic schools of St. Margaret and Madeleine d'Houet. Of these four schools, George P. Vanier is the only one to offer a French Immersion program. High schools serving MacEwan Glen include the public schools of Queen Elizabeth and William Aberhart, with William Aberhart offering a French Immersion program.
