Having been established in 1914, the community of Hillhurst is one of the oldest communities in Calgary. Following the construction of the Mewata Bridge over the Bow River in 1954, 14 Street was transformed into a major link between the community and the downtown area. This helped lead to commercial redevelopment of the housing within the area, which has been further enhanced with the help of the Business Revitalization Zone Association. Today, 14 Street serves as the north boundary of the community along with 8 Avenue. The community is further bound to the south by Bow River, to the east by 10 Street and to the west by 18 Street. Due to its location, Hillcrest provides its residents with access to a number of commercial and recreational opportunities, including those found in the Downtown area as well as in Riley Park and Hillhurst Athletic Park.
For residents who would prefer to stay closer to home, the Hillhurst/Sunnyside community association is quite active and provides residents with access to a variety of recreational facilities. Facilities available to residents include ball diamonds, soccer pitches, tennis courts and a gym. The association also hosts a number of programs and activities, including year-round daycare, seniors programs, community outreach programs, soccer and more.
Elementary-aged children whose parents are interested in properties for sale in the Hillhurst community may attend the public schools of Hillhurt, Queen Elizabeth, Banff Trail or King George, with Banff Trail and King George offering a French Immersion program. They may also choose to attend the Catholic elementary schools of St. Joseph or St. Pius, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. Junior high students may attend the public schools of Queen Elizabeth, George P. Vanier or Branton, with the latter two offering a French Immersion program, or the Catholic junior high schools of St. Joseph and Madeleine d'Houet. Public high schools serving the community include Queen Elizabeth and William Aberhart, while Catholic schools serving the community include St. Francis and St. Mary's.
