Formerly known simply as East Calgary, the community of Downtown East Village is bounded to the north by Confluence Way, to the south by 9th Avenue SE, to the east by 6th Street SE and to the west by 3rd Street SE. Once alive with activity, the area enjoyed its greatest boom from 1875 through 1913. Since then, development has slowed down in the area. Still, the area is recognized by many as an area with a great deal of potential in terms of downtown development.

For those who are interested in living in the Downtown East Village community, there are several housing options available. Thanks to the community's long history, a blend of housing types has been developed over the years. The community is also home to a number of commercial and community facilities that are available for residents to enjoy. The community facilities, which can hold up to 375 people in the main hall, provide residents with plenty of opportunities to participate in community activities and organizations. Not only does the facility feature a stage and meeting rooms, it also offers a gym and sound system. The downtown Calgary area is served by a number of public schools.

Elementary-aged children of parents interested in area homes for sale may attend Connaught/Kingsland or William Reid, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. Junior high students may also attend one of two different public junior high schools: Mount Royal and Elboya. Like William Reid, Elboya junior high also offers a French Immersion program. High school students who live in the downtown area attend Western Canada High School, which also offers a French Immersion program.
