Although the area that comprises the Deer Run community was annexed in 1961, it was not developed until 1978. Today, the community is bound to the north by Deersaxon Circle and Bow River, to the south by the Fish Creek Provincial Park North Boundary, to the east by Bow River and to the west by Bow Bottom Trail. Due to the location of the Deer Run community, residents enjoy easy access to a number of recreational opportunities available at nearby Bow River, Fish Creek Provincial Park and Lake Sikome. The community is also home to a number of hills and green spaces for residents to enjoy. At the same time, the Deer Run community is connected to the Downtown area and many other city sites and attractions via Deerfoot Trail and Bow Bottom Trail.
Closer to home, the Deer Run community also provides residents with access to a variety of events and activities that are hosted through the community centre. Capable of holding up to 275 people within its main hall, the community centre also features a dividable gym, a multipurpose meeting room, a commercial kitchen, an exercise gym, a preschool, a racquetball court and storage space. The community association also maintains a hockey rink, a pleasure rink, baseball diamonds and soccer fields for residents to enjoy.
Parents of elementary-aged children interested in available real estate in the Deer Run community may attend the public schools of Deer Run and Sam Livingston and the Catholic schools of Don Bosco and St. Cecilia. Both Sam Livingston and St. Cecilia offer French Immersion programs. The public junior high schools of Wilma Hansen and Fairview also serve the community, with the latter offering a French Immersion program. Those who are interested in a Catholic junior high school may be interested in learning more about the Catholic schools of Don Bosco and Ecole St. Matthew. High schools serving the community include the public high schools of Lord Beaverbrook and Dr. E.P. Scarlett and the Catholic high school of Bishop Grandin.
