The progressive new urban community of Currie, also known as Currie Barracks, is a residential and commercial development on a former Canadian Forces Base in Calgary West. This super-modern neighbourhood will continue to expand through to 2030. The plan for Stage 2 of Currie is the first community in the country and, in North America, to have received Gold Certification as a Leed-ND community. The criteria for this is walkability (within 5 minutes of shopping, parks and transportation), sustainable landscape, environmentally sound management of storm water and green building practices. At final build out there will be room for 12,000 residents in Currie.
This striking neighbourhood follows on the success of nearby Garrison Woods with its reimagined streetscape and urban village concept. Currie will be the ultimate work/play neighbourhood. Elementary schools include Killarney, Glenbrook, St. James Separate School and the French Catholic school, École Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Junior high schools are Bishop Pinkham in nearby Lakeview and A.E. Cross on 37th St SW. Bishop Carroll Senior High School is on the south side of Currie and Central Memorial is across Crowchild Trail with an IB program available at Henry Wise Wood Senior High School about 3 km away.
