Formerly known as Riverside, the community of Bridgeland is situated in the northeast section of Downtown Calgary. The community is bound to the south by Bow River, to the north by the community of Renfrew, to the east by Deerfoot Trail and to the west by Edmonton Trail. The primarily residential community features a mix of single-family homes and parkside condos, but also features a variety of retail shopping outlets, restaurants and other commercial businesses. At the same time, thanks to the community's location, residents enjoy easy access to the recreational opportunities available at Bow River, Elbow River and Tom Campbell's Hill Park. Closer to home, public facilities available to residents include a tennis court, a soccer pitch, a disc golf course, a baseball field, a children's playground and a hockey rink.
Established by Russian-German immigrants during the first population boom of the 1880s, the community of Bridgeland was originally comprised of primarily Ukrainian and Italian immigrants. As such, parts of lower Bridgeland were regularly referred to as "Little Italy." Today, the residential community is known for its high degree of walk-ability and was listed among the five "most livable neighbourhoods" in Calgary by Fast Forward Weekly.
